LED strip lights offer endless possibilities to light up your space, from your indoor home and office cove lighting or outdoor feature lighting. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right LED strip light for your needs? So we’re going to help you sort that out today sharing more more about the different types of LED Striplights, LED chip technologies and applications.

Types of LED Strip Lights

  1. Single Color LED Strip Lights Warm White 3000K / Cool white 4000K / Daylight 6000K / Red / Green / Blue

  2. RGB LED Strip Lights Allows you to create dynamic and customisable lighting effects with a controller

  3. RGBW LED Strip Lights Wider range of colours compared to RBG Strip Lights, controllable and customisable with a remote controller

  4. COB LED Strip Lights Also known as the "no dots" LED strip light, COB Strip lights creates a linear, seamless and uniformed look. Read more about what they are and how they differ from normal LED strip lights here.

SMD 2835 vs 3528 vs 5050 LED Chips, what are they and which is better?

SMD refers to 'Surface Mounted Device', which refers to the LED chip that is directly mounted onto the strip. The numbers after the SMD simply refer to the physical size of the LED Chip. Take SMD 3528 for example, this means that the LED chip are 3.5mm height and 2.8mm width. Out of the 3 options, 5050 and 2835 are the popular LED light strips in the market right now.

Both options are dimmable, but 5050 LED chips can produce RGB colour options. Assuming they have the same LED chip density, 2835 SMDs can produce 360 to 720 lumens of light per meter of the light strip whereas 5050 LED strip can produce up to a 1000 lumens per meter of light. This makes SMD 5050 LED Strips a more powerful choice to illuminate up larger spaces.

Indoors or Outdoors?

If you're looking to only install the LED strips for your home, IP20 ingress protection rated striplights are sufficient. For outdoors, you need to choose IP65 and above rated LED Strip lights for safety.
