Project Showcase: Singapore Taekwondo Federation Sports Hall

Some lighting projects may look straightforward on paper but raise real questions during the design phase. The Singapore Taekwondo Federation sports hall was one of them: A large training hall with 9-metre-high ceilings, 40 aging metal halide fixtures to replace, and a performance requirement that left no room for error.

The Challenge

Replacing 40 units of 1000W metal halide high bay lights at 9 metres is not a standard swap. At that height, every decision about fixture type, spacing, and output matters. Get it wrong and you end up with dim, uneven light that becomes costly to fix. We conducted a DIALux simulation to provide assurance and confidence that our proposed model and layout will be able to meet the client's requirements.

The federation needed lighting that could support daily training as well as competitive events. This means that the lux levels and uniformity had to be both sufficient and consistent across the entire floor area.

The Installation and Result

When installation began for the first row, the client had doubts. This is a common experience with large-scale installations. Partial lighting is never representative of the finished result, but it can be unsettling to watch.

Not only did they massive decreased their energy consumption by upgrading from metal halide to BRITE LED Hi-Lux High Bay Lights, the wide beam angle and superior hi-lux performance provided uniform, bright light across every corner of the hall with no dim patches, no hotspots.

The Singapore Taekwondo Federation was delighted with both the lighting quality and the installation process.
