Most lighting projects involve some level of trade-off between what is technically ideal and what the budget allows. The Mokara Gymnastics Academy project was different from the start. Performance was the top priority when building a world class gymnasium.
Mokara set out to build Singapore's premier gymnastics facility designed to international standards, with coaching programmes aligned to elite and NCAA collegiate levels. Every detail of the facility was built to that standard. The lighting had to be too.

The Brief: World-Class Standards, No Compromises
The lighting brief for Mokara was among the most technically demanding we have worked on. Not because of the scale, but because of the number of competing requirements that all had to be met simultaneously within a single space.
The training floor is used for artistic gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline, and recreational programmes across all age groups. Each discipline has specific implications for how the space needs to be lit:
High Jumping Zones had to be strictly observed for safety. Areas above trampolines and high-jumping apparatus where fixtures could not be positioned, both for safety and to avoid any interference with the equipment above
A moving platform traverses part of the ceiling zone, so no fixture could be installed in its path
Glare control was non-negotiable. Gymnasts performing tumbling, aerial, and apparatus routines regularly face directly upward. Any glare from overhead fixtures at those moments is both uncomfortable and potentially dangerous
Lux levels had to meet the SS531 Lighting Standards across the entire active training floor, including in areas adjacent to the no-light zones where direct overhead fixtures were excluded
Lighting power budget compliance to meet the building's lighting power density requirements, which meant achieving the required lux levels at the lowest practical installed wattage without compromising on the lighting performance
Meeting any two or three of these requirements in isolation is straightforward. Meeting all five simultaneously in a space where the client's expectation was world-class, this is where BRITE's technical expertise shines.
Like all complex projects, the Mokara lighting design went through multiple rounds of DiALux simulation as requirements evolved and the client's vision for the space became more defined. We worked closely with our Interior Designer partner Sketch.ID, to work out the best possible solution to meet the client's requirements.

The Solution: Custom Linear High Bay With Anti-Glare Frosted Diffuser
For the Mokara training floor, BRITE had customised a linear high bay LED fixture with a custom frosted diffuser lens to achieve 2 critical points:
Significantly reduces glare — the diffused output eliminates the concentrated intensity that causes direct glare, without sacrificing the total lumen output of the fixture
Improves floor-level uniformity — a wider distribution means the coverage footprint of each fixture overlaps more effectively with adjacent fixtures, filling in the gaps that the no-light zone exclusions created and maintaining consistent lux levels across the training floor
The combination of the anti-glare diffuser and the DIALux-optimised fixture placement addressed all five design requirements simultaneously — lux levels, uniformity, glare control, no-light zone compliance, and lighting power budget.
What It Felt Like to See It Finished
Beyond just providing a lighting solution that meets the client's requirements, what made this project genuinely rewarding was seeing the finished space through Mokara's own lens , through their website and social media, showing a beautifully lit world-class facility filled with athletes training and children learning. That is the outcome that makes the hours of simulation, the multiple revision rounds, and the precision of the design process worth every bit of effort.
Mokara Gymnastics Academy is a strong example of why specialised facilities need a lighting approach that goes beyond standard commercial practice. A gymnastics hall is not an office. An examination hall is not a warehouse. A facility built to international standards deserves a lighting specification engineered to match.
For architects, ID firms, and facility owners working on specialised spaces, whether sports, healthcare, education, or any environment with specific technical or operational constraints — the right lighting partner is one who will work through the complexity methodically, run the simulation as many times as it takes, and deliver a result that the space deserves.
BRITE provides full LED lighting design, technical advisory and DiALux simulation for new builds and major fit-outs: from straightforward commercial spaces to complex facilities with specific operational, safety, or performance requirements.
